Direct Connection - No DNS system

Your server and your network will be set up with a direct connection to the Internet. You will not be using DNS services. The following conditions apply:

  • Your clients will connect to your AppleShare IP server through a web browser as long as the URL is a valid IP address.
  • Clients can connect to FTP server with valid IP address.
  • Clients can connect via the Chooser with valid IP address and AppleShare Client 3.7.2 or higher.
  • AppleShare IP Mail server will send and deliver mail to local and remote users. The users' email address will consist of an IP address instead of a domain name (i.e. janedoe@24.12.124.12). Clients will be able to send email outside of your network.

If you have a direct connection to the Internet that is "live" or up all of the time, it is probably through a router. The router can be a network device, such as a Cisco router, or a computer running software allowing it to act as a router, such as a Macintosh running Vicom Soft Router or a Windows NT server.

Refer to TCP/IP Connections tutorial for Private IP Addressing instructions. It is located on the AppleShare IP CD.

Follow these steps to correctly set up your AppleShare IP server:

  • Prepare your computer as detailed in Chapter 1 of AppleShare IP Getting Started manual.
  • Configure the TCP/IP control panel of the AppleShare IP server with assigned static IP address as well as IP address for local network's IP gateway or router in the "Router address" field. There is no entry for Name Server Address field.
  • Install AppleShare IP as instructed Chapter 2 of AppleShare IP Getting Started manual for Normal Setup.
  • In the AppleShare IP Easy Setup program, choose "Normal" setup when prompted at the "Choose a Network Type" screen.

Once you have followed and completed the installation instructions in the Getting Started manual, your AppleShare IP server should be ready for service.

For further assistance or for help in troubleshooting your setup, refer to the AppleShare IP Help documentation.
